Multiobjective Retuning the Power System Stabilizer (PSS) of a Real Power Plant in Iran Grid

Authors

Abstract:

The safe operation of power system depends on its stability and security supply in all times. The dynamic instability (small signal instability) is one of phenomena that results in power system instability and has been discussed as a challenge in power system control and operation from a long time ago. Commonly the dynamic instability appears as undamped low frequency electromechanical oscillations or with insufficient damping. In order to damp these oscillations and improve dynamic stability, the use of Power System Stabilizer (PSS) in excitation systems is the most effective option. In this paper the impact of PSSs of various units of a real power plant on Iran grid dynamic stability is investigated and its performance is improved. In this way first the excitation system and PSS model of the power plant are identified and verified, and then the main parameters of PSSs are optimally retuned using the proposed method based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. In the following, power plant operation is considered in different disturbances with respect to the retuned PSSs, so that, the effect of optimal parameters on local and inter-area oscillation modes damping is taken into account, not only within time domain analysis, but also within frequency domain analysis. The results of proposed flexible and comprehensive analysis display the suitable performance of retuned PSSs.

Design of A Self-Tuning Adaptive Power System Stabilizer

Power system stabilizers (PSSs) must be capable of providing appropriate stabilization signals over abroad range of operating conditions and disturbances. The main idea of this paper is changing aclassic PSS (CPSS) to an adaptive PSS using genetic algorithm. This new genetic algorithm based onadaptive PSS (GAPSS) improves power system damping, considerably. The controller design issue isformula...

Decentralized Robust Power System Stabilizer Design

This paper suggests a method for designing PSS to damp multi-machine power system oscillations.  The method is based on robust control theory. First, the conventional method for designing robust controller in LMI framework is illustrated. Then, the suggested method is given, in which, a PID output feedback controller is tuned using the LMI approach. Mostly, the classical methods are used t...

Performance Modeling of Power Generation System of a Thermal Plant

The present paper discusses the development of a performance model of power generation system of a thermal plant for performance evaluation using Markov technique and probabilistic approach. The study covers two areas: development of a predictive model and evaluation of performance with the help of developed model. The present system of thermal plant under study consists of four subsystems with...

Tuning of Power System Stabilizer (Unitrol D) in Benghazi North Power Plant

The use of power system stabilizers (PSSs) to damp power system swing mode of oscillations is of practical important. The authors purpose is to retune the power system stabilizer (PSS1A) parameters in Unitrol D produced by ABB– was installed in 1995 in Benghazi North Power Plants (BNPPs) at General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL). Power systems are steadily growing with larger capacity, so...

Basic Issues in Identification Scheme of a Self-Tuning Power System Stabilizer

Power system stabilizers have been widely used and successfully implemented for the improvement of power system damping. However, a fixed parameter power system stabilizer tends to be sensitive to variations in generator dynamics so that, for operating conditions away from those used for design, the effectiveness of the stabilizer can be greatly impaired. With the advent of microprocessor techn...
